Art Sites Program

The Downtown Women’s Center invites local artists to propose creative services toward the creation of
“Art Site” Projects to be implemented within the Downtown Women’s Center’s new building, Project
Home.

Projects by local artists are intended to make the new home of the Downtown Women’s Center a dynamic
and vibrant place to live, work and visit.  DWC is pleased to offer artists the opportunity to apply for
contracts for completion of projects meeting specifications within
program categories.

Residencies.  Artist-residencies for community-based/teaching artists to coordinate participatory
workshops culminating in art site installations.

Site Installations.  Visual artists to create new work meeting the specified objectives for art sites to be
installed within the Downtown Women’s Center’s new home.

Green Design Prototypes

The new home for the DWC, when open in 2010, will include a social enterprise retail store supporting
DWC’s services for homeless women.  While as yet unnamed, the retail store will feature products that
have been hand-made using readily available materials, such as recyclables and found items re-purposed
for new use.

Innovative designers are currently exploring product prototypes, focused on creative use of donated items
or waste materials resulting in functional, beautiful and innovative items that hold a wide appeal among
urban dwellers.  Many of these unique products will be fabricated by homeless women taking part in DWC’
s work-development programs.

Green Design Studio will showcase product designs in development, as well as smart-art projects
contributed by designers and artists from among DWC’s extremely talented and innovative volunteer corp.
