Cynthia and Keith have long practiced the art of combining bits and
pieces of the material world to create works that intrigue. Both have
worked independently to build assemblage wall works and sculptures,
having rummaged junk shops, markets, streets, the natural world and
their own household environments to gather to their studios the many
found items that serve to stir their imaginations. The resulting works
bear the quality of being age-worn and familiar, while at the same time
asserting themselves with an all-new identity and presence.
For the current exhibition, Cindy and Keith have brought their
imaginations into conversation with each other through the creation of
collage works built through visual dialogue. Using pages from a book of
periodic tables as their starting point, the artists have taken turns to
add clipped and pieced imagery from throw-away print sources
(magazines, catalogues and the like) and in so doing have constructed
a portfolio of thirty dialogues of uncertain content. These artfully
rendered pages are intimate and involving – they seem to require the
viewer as yet another collaborator in the project, tasked with the role
of deciphering meaning from the symbols and narratives that appear
embodied within each page.
