Joe Stauffer
Multi-Media

I have done art work nearly all of my life, as I found out early on that I could draw well
with fair ease.  I have worked in a wide variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor,
pen and ink and wood. My work has generally been characterized as
representational but in the last three years it had moved into a variety of more stylized
images using watercolor on gessoed watercolor paper, canvas or masonite  in a
reverse method of painting where the negative spaces are removed to reveal the
positive images. This process also creates some nice visual texture that I think adds
a richness to the piece and a bit of a batik effect.
Presently, I have moved back to more representational images found in nature that
is: wildlife and landscape and an occasional human figure if I am so moved. I am
synthesizing the reverse method of watercolor with the more traditional one to
hopefully create pieces that rely on color, light and visual texture to satisfy the eye,
heart and the soul of the viewer. I do seem to be drawn back to the more
representational route but I have a fond place in my heart for well done abstract
images. I would say that at this point in time my art is journey of discovery about who
I am, what interests me, what I want to say, and how I feel about th
e world around
me.
