| Artist Profiles Sophie Lee Painting / Multi-Media Sophie was born in Taiwan then transplanted to southern California at age 9. Raised between cultures, she is both East and West, American and Taiwanese. She studied fashion design and trained in painting at Art Center Pasadena, working in publishing before returning to painting. The artist is fascinated by history and cultures of the world, yet her work is inspired by the little things in everyday life. "A dew drop on a leaf can be as wonderful as the greatest paintings and as amazing as the architecture of skyscrapers or etched lines in rock formations in Japan. It is all nature." Her strongest influence is experience felt in her own life and body. Sophie’s recent works are a response to Fall changes in the Pacific Northwest, where the scale and abruptness of changes in nature transform suddenly, some- thing not experienced in Southern California. There is a sense of renewal as layers fall away to reveal the simple pleasures of texture and pattern. Her works on scratch board have a strong parallel as the medium is peeled away and images emerge. The narrow paper used in her ink drawings provide opportunity to reveal close croppings of a larger image. In the falling away of ornament, core elements become more visible and offer a new perspective. |
